Not every evaluation is the same, and knowing which one your child needs is the first real step.
If you’re just starting to look into evaluations, the options can feel confusing. It’s hard to know where to even begin. So before anything else, let’s talk through what kind of evaluation actually fits where your family is right now.
If your child has been diagnosed before
If your child already has an autism diagnosis and you’re simply needing it updated, such as to keep services going or meet an insurer’s requirements, we can help. This is a more contained, focused process, built around confirming what’s already known so you can keep moving forward without added delay.
If you’re just starting to look for answers
Many of the parents we talk to are calling because they know something is going on, but they don’t yet have the words for it, and that not-knowing is often the hardest part. Here, it helps to understand there are actually two different paths forward.

Autism-specific evaluation
Our job is to answer one question as clearly and carefully as we can — is this autism, or is something else going on? If it is autism, we will explain to you why we think so, what this means for you and your child, and how to get your child the services that will help them thrive. If it’s not autism, we won’t leave you guessing. We’ll walk you through what we’re seeing and help you take the next step, often with a referral for the broader evaluation described here.
Not what we do
Neuropsychological / psychoeducational evaluation
A broad, deeply thorough look at how a child thinks, learns, remembers, pays attention, and takes in the world. These evaluations are incredibly valuable, often take a full day or two, and are best done in person. This isn’t something we do, but we’ll always be honest with you if it’s what your child needs.
However your family found your way here, our goal is the same: to give you real clarity, delivered with care, from clinicians who take the time to understand your child. Wherever this evaluation leads, you should walk away with a clearer picture than you had before, and a clear sense of what to do next.
Designed for telehealth from the ground up.
We’ve built our practice around this focused approach on purpose. Because we’re answering one clear clinical question, we can do it thoughtfully and rigorously over telehealth, to the same standard you’d expect in person.
Your child, in the environment where they’re truly themselves
When we’re assessing a child who’s struggling socially, one of the most important things to untangle is why. Is this child anxious around new people? Are they overwhelmed by an unfamiliar setting? Are they struggling to read social cues, even with people they trust? A child sitting in an unfamiliar office, meeting a clinician for the first time, often can’t show us their true baseline, because the visit itself is overwhelming.
Meeting your child at home changes that. On the call, we’re there mostly to observe, while you, the person your child knows and trusts most, lead them through specific interactions we guide you through. That gives us a clearer window into how your child actually communicates, plays, and responds, in the environment where they’re most comfortable being themselves. In many ways, it’s a truer picture than an office visit could offer.
A testing battery built specifically for this setting
Not every clinical tool translates well to a screen, and we’ve never assumed otherwise. The ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) has long been considered a gold-standard tool, and while it technically has a remote-use option, we don’t consider it a strong measure over telehealth, so we don’t use it that way.
Instead, we’ve spent years reviewing, testing, and refining an evaluation process built around tools that hold up clinically online. Our evaluations are centered on the CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale), often alongside the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised), which looks at symptoms across a child’s lifetime rather than just the present moment. Depending on what we’re seeing, we may bring in additional measures, including the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, to round out the picture. This isn’t a fixed checklist we run through, it’s a group of clinical diagnostic tools we’ve deliberately assembled and continue to refine, because what matters most to us is getting it right, for your child specifically.

Before your call
We'll send you a set of questionnaires to complete ahead of time, so we can start forming a picture of your child before we ever meet.
Your child's story
About 45 minutes focused on you: your child's history, symptoms, what's been tried so far, and what's prompting you to seek answers now. This is also when we complete the CARS and, when appropriate, the ADI-R.
Your child joins
Rather than interacting with your child directly, we guide you through activities with them while we observe, in the comfort of your own home.
After the call
Depending on what we've seen, we may ask for a few additional questionnaires, and occasionally reach out to your child's teacher as well.
Your results
We share our clinical impression the same day, so you're never left waiting to hear what we found. A full written report follows within two weeks.
Wherever this leads, our job doesn’t end when the call does.
If autism isn’t the answer
Sometimes, what we see doesn’t point to autism, and that’s not a dead end. In these cases, we’ll talk through what we did observe, and help you understand what might be going on instead. Often, that means a referral for a broader neuropsychological or psychoeducational evaluation, so you can get the full picture your child deserves.
Even without a diagnosis, most parents tell us they leave with a much clearer sense of what’s going on with their child than when they started. That clarity, even without a label, is often what makes it possible to take the next real step, instead of continuing to search in the dark.
If autism is the answer
If we do arrive at an autism diagnosis, we see that moment as just the beginning of our work with you. An autism diagnosis can be overwhelming to hear, and it means something different for every family and every child. We take the time to explain what we found, what it means for your child specifically, and what services and support are likely to help them thrive.
We also make sure you leave with a report built to do its job: to support a smooth handoff to your next provider, and to meet the requirements your insurer or school may ask for, so a diagnosis doesn’t become another obstacle standing between your child and the support they need.

First-time evaluation
Includes pre-evaluation questionnaires, background history, a guided observation session, any needed follow-up questionnaires, same-day discussion of results, and a full written report within two weeks.
Updated Diagnosis
For children with an existing autism diagnosis who need an updated DSM-5 checklist confirming that diagnostic criteria continue to be met for insurance, ABA, school, or other documentation purposes.
Insurance & payment
Most families work with us on a private-pay basis. We provide a detailed superbill you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. In New Hampshire, we’re also in-network with Aetna and Cigna.
Where we practice
We’re able to see families across most states, through reciprocal licensing arrangements between states (PSYPACT). Confirm your state is covered.

The evaluation itself typically takes place in a single call, split between about 45 minutes of background history with you and a session observing your child. You'll hear our clinical impression and next steps the same day, and receive your full written report within two weeks.
